[00:00:04]: Welcome to Retail For the Rest of Us, a podcast for indie retailers, [00:00:07]: makers and shop owners who wanna do business differently. I'm [00:00:11]: your host, Janine Mulone, retail expert, small business cheerleader, [00:00:15]: and the founder of Feel Good Retail. On this show, you'll hear [00:00:18]: insights, strategies, and ideas on how to sustain and scale your [00:00:22]: shop without sacrificing your sanity. Each week, you'll hear from [00:00:26]: me and the occasional guest expert in what I hope feels more like a voice [00:00:29]: note from your retail BFF than a business podcast. [00:00:33]: Additional goodies and support can be found in our show notes and at feelgoodretail.com. [00:00:38]: Now let's get into the show. [00:00:48]: Hey, everyone. Welcome back to Retail for the Rest of Us. I'm your [00:00:52]: host, Janine Mulone, and this is season six of the podcast. [00:00:56]: I know. Can you believe it? I personally don't feel a day over season two [00:00:59]: because I am just now speaking into a real microphone [00:01:03]: instead of a pair of Apple wired headphones that I've had since, like, [00:01:07]: 2010. So if you notice a certain [00:01:11]: flare, a little NPR soothing vibe to my voice, [00:01:15]: that's why. It's because I feel like Frasier Crane sitting behind this [00:01:18]: microphone staring at my huge screen in front of me with [00:01:22]: notes. That being said, I usually ignore the notes as I'm sure you can tell. [00:01:25]: It's a real off the cuff vibe here, but I [00:01:29]: am excited to be back. And I hope that the last few months have offered [00:01:32]: you an opportunity to rest, review, restore. [00:01:37]: I wanted to bring the podcast back now because we are literally closing the [00:01:40]: door, financially speaking, on last year. This is coming out [00:01:44]: right around the good old tax day, so I'm sure you need a boost. I [00:01:48]: certainly do. And I just think [00:01:52]: it's really time to look forward and to look [00:01:55]: to the next eight months of the year, what we wanna create, what we wanna [00:01:59]: bring to life, what we wanna sell, what goals we're hoping to [00:02:02]: achieve. As Feel Good Retail has evolved, [00:02:06]: what I have become passionate about [00:02:10]: is helping entrepreneurs feel like the back [00:02:14]: of house, their systems, their operations, their strategy, [00:02:18]: feels as aligned and exciting as the things [00:02:22]: that happen front of house, on the sales floor, on their [00:02:26]: favorite social media channels, in their community. [00:02:31]: And that means that the first few months of the [00:02:34]: year is often spent kind of recalibrating, reviewing, [00:02:38]: and starting to project into the new year. So I'm feeling [00:02:42]: excited to fully turn my face towards the sun and look at [00:02:46]: the rest of 2024 together. That being [00:02:49]: said, I know because I've heard from a few of you [00:02:52]: that it feels like a really scary time to be an indie retail [00:02:56]: owner. I know that being on Instagram, you've seen [00:03:00]: many of your favorite shops closing, institutions, small [00:03:04]: businesses that you thought were really innovative and exciting, [00:03:08]: and businesses owned by your friends, and that [00:03:11]: is really scary. As someone who has been through her [00:03:15]: share of closures as well in her career and more [00:03:19]: recently, I know how scary and [00:03:23]: painful and hard those kind of transitions are. [00:03:26]: And I hope that this podcast can [00:03:30]: serve as both a respite and a [00:03:34]: place where you can feel really good and feel really excited to hear about [00:03:37]: people who are doing really amazing things and maybe take some [00:03:41]: tips away for yourself, as well as a place that we can [00:03:45]: be realistic about the reality of running a business. [00:03:48]: This is why I'm so passionate about business operations, [00:03:52]: about strategy, because closures, [00:03:56]: although they happen for many, many, many reasons, [00:04:01]: I think that we can often see things coming down the [00:04:04]: pipeline a little bit more clearly when we understand [00:04:08]: the back end of our businesses better. I don't want any [00:04:12]: of you to be shocked by a [00:04:15]: transition or an evolution or a downsizing or closing [00:04:19]: in your business. I want you to be able to be as [00:04:22]: comfortable as the CEO and strategist behind your business as [00:04:26]: you are as the creative director or the visionary. Because the last [00:04:30]: thing I want for you is for you to feel disempowered or out of control [00:04:34]: in your business. And listen, that's not to say that shit doesn't [00:04:38]: happen and things don't just hit the fan sometimes. Trust [00:04:41]: me. Someday, I will buy you all a drink and tell you all about the [00:04:45]: times that has happened to me. But regardless of the circumstance, [00:04:48]: I do want you to feel like you're capable of making empowered and [00:04:52]: strategic decisions. And the first thing that that requires [00:04:56]: is being able to engage with the business itself. [00:05:00]: That was a huge motivator for me creating the Here and Now, which is our [00:05:03]: monthly membership that serves indie retailers looking to uncover [00:05:07]: the secrets, skills, and cycles needed to build their sustainable [00:05:11]: shop. Inside, you get access to our [00:05:14]: resource library, seasonal strategic workshops, monthly [00:05:18]: almanacs, and some extra surprises that will help you [00:05:22]: shift the focus away from just the linear growth hamster wheel [00:05:26]: and lean more into the slow, steady, and seasonal approach [00:05:30]: to retail to make sure you have all of your bases covered and that you [00:05:33]: feel really confident as a strategic superstar. [00:05:37]: I want indie retailers to feel [00:05:41]: as comfortable with analytics, with strategy, with operations [00:05:44]: as they do with creativity, visioning new [00:05:48]: products, working with customers. Frankly, I think there's [00:05:52]: plenty of marketing advice out there, but not enough [00:05:55]: content around helping business owners identify what [00:05:59]: strategies will work best to achieve their unique goals. [00:06:02]: And what that leads to is overwhelm, burnout, [00:06:06]: exhaustion, confusion, disempowerment, and, [00:06:11]: frankly, it leads to a lot of businesses looking exactly the [00:06:15]: same. And that's not why I love indie retail. I [00:06:18]: love indie retail because of the variety, the diversity, the, [00:06:22]: like, wacky unique concepts that people bring to life that really [00:06:26]: just work and that make us feel more [00:06:29]: connected to them. Because if every indie retailer keeps looking [00:06:33]: the same, it's gonna feel just like shopping at big box stores. [00:06:37]: So the Here and Now is our seasonal membership you [00:06:41]: can join. You can learn more at feelgoodretail.com/join. It's [00:06:45]: $28 a month, and you can learn more, of course, on the website. [00:06:49]: I really wanted to create something accessible. We've been having so much fun in there [00:06:53]: so far in Q1, and there's lots to dive into if you join [00:06:57]: today. That being said, I did wanna share [00:07:01]: something that comes from the resource library that I've built inside of the Here and [00:07:04]: Now, because I think it will ground us into this new season [00:07:08]: and give you a step forward if you're feeling like, "you're right. I [00:07:12]: do need to be more strategic. I do need to prioritize spending [00:07:16]: time in the back end of the business. I do need to make time [00:07:19]: to serve my role as CEO of this business." And [00:07:23]: listen. I know CEO is, like, such a blah term. Especially [00:07:27]: when you're a solo business owner. It's like, "okay, let me just change [00:07:31]: my hat here and, like, put on a tie." But it's [00:07:34]: really critical to be both an operator inside of [00:07:38]: your business and a strategic leader. Those are two different tasks, [00:07:42]: making the plan and executing the plan. So with [00:07:46]: that in mind, I wanted to share an excerpt from a resource inside of [00:07:50]: the Here and Now called Retail Rituals aka 3 things to add to [00:07:54]: your calendar right now no matter the season. Because seasons come and [00:07:57]: go, but some things never change. Like Jeff Bezos acting [00:08:01]: and looking, frankly, like a cartoon villain. By incorporating [00:08:04]: these three recurring rituals into your calendar, we've got you [00:08:08]: covered for the month. You'll review the past, plan for the [00:08:12]: future, and take time to make sure that you are well resourced enough to [00:08:16]: keep moving forward in life and business. What totals [00:08:20]: to a few hours of work a month is gonna give you a 360 view [00:08:23]: of your shop and will work wonders in soothing your nerves. But why [00:08:27]: rituals and not just tasks or meetings? Well, because first of [00:08:30]: all, tasks and meetings sound boring as hell. Nobody wants more meetings, [00:08:34]: and I certainly don't need to add another thing to my to do list. When [00:08:37]: you have a meeting set with yourself or a priority just for [00:08:41]: you, how often does it get pushed back to the bottom of your to [00:08:45]: do list? My guess, pretty frequently. Rituals, however, [00:08:50]: become deeper, better, more vibrant, and [00:08:53]: more powerful through repetition. They also have [00:08:57]: a clear agenda and a desired outcome. So what [00:09:01]: are the 3 dates we're adding to your Gcal right now? A [00:09:05]: data date, a strategy session, and your [00:09:09]: shopkeeper self care. First is your date with your data. [00:09:12]: All you need is 30 to 60 minutes at least one [00:09:16]: time a month, and your goals are to check-in on the health of [00:09:20]: your shop, build familiarity with your analytics, and pivot your plan [00:09:24]: where necessary. What you'll need is a simple data doc - you [00:09:27]: can find our template inside of the Here and Now - your sales software, and [00:09:31]: your past data and/or benchmarks. Getting comfortable with [00:09:36]: the quantitative side of your business is critical as an entrepreneur. Retail is [00:09:40]: after all a numbers game. Sales, sell through, [00:09:43]: inventory markup, conversion, retention, it's a lot of [00:09:47]: math. And I know that can be scary for many of you, so I like [00:09:50]: to keep it simple and make it consistent with data dates. [00:09:54]: First, set the mood. Get in your softest clothes, light a [00:09:58]: candle, get a fun bev. The more intimidating [00:10:01]: this is to you, the cozier and more comfortable you should be. Close all of [00:10:05]: your tabs and put your phone on do not disturb. Pull up your [00:10:09]: sales software and record your stats. Inside the Here and Now, you'll find [00:10:13]: a list of KPIs that you could track, including my non-negotiables, [00:10:16]: and you can use previous sessions and your past averages as a [00:10:20]: benchmark for success. Ritual number two is [00:10:24]: a strategy session. You'll need about 60 to 90 minutes, and I [00:10:28]: recommend doing this at least once a quarter, but ideally once a [00:10:31]: month. Your goals are to make a plan to support your sales goals, [00:10:35]: review what's working well and what needs improvement, and craft a strategy. [00:10:39]: What you'll need is your sales goal, your datasheet, [00:10:43]: and a notebook or a blank doc. Becoming more strategic [00:10:47]: is a superpower. It will save you time, money, and lots of [00:10:50]: headaches. So much effort is wasted by making decisions as they [00:10:54]: come. Crafting a strategy can help focus your attention. Think of [00:10:58]: like a magnifying glass in the sun. By creating a plan, you [00:11:02]: give yourself permission to experiment, test what works, and make progress [00:11:06]: and improvements over time. Plus, when you centralize your decision [00:11:09]: making, you free up a hell of a lot of space in your brain. [00:11:13]: Inside the Here and Now, you'll find an exact agenda, [00:11:17]: opening, first half, second half, and closing for how to run [00:11:21]: your own successful strategy session. [00:11:25]: And last but very much not least is your shopkeeper [00:11:28]: self-care. Yes. I literally want you to schedule [00:11:32]: this and make it nonnegotiable for yourself at least [00:11:36]: once a month with the goal being to give you an opportunity [00:11:39]: for rest, create space between you and the business, and [00:11:43]: support you doing your best work. All you'll need is [00:11:46]: yourself and time away from the shop, because small business ownership [00:11:50]: can feel like a never ending grind. Sure. We love it. But [00:11:54]: damn, it can be hard to figure out where your business ends and where you [00:11:57]: begin. You deserve a break. And if you need the extra [00:12:01]: motivation, know that the better you take care of yourself, the better running your [00:12:04]: shop will feel. And don't worry. Your to-do list will be right where you left [00:12:08]: it when you're done. I personally suggest making [00:12:12]: a menu of things to help you unwind that fall [00:12:16]: into 15 minute practices, 30 minute practices, or [00:12:19]: an hour plus practices so that you can fit in this kind of self care [00:12:23]: whenever you need a break and also schedule bigger moments of [00:12:27]: rest and rejuvenation into your business. So [00:12:31]: what's that? A couple hours a month to feel totally on top of your [00:12:34]: shit at work? Sounds good to me. And if you want [00:12:38]: even more instruction, including our templates, our [00:12:41]: KPIs, the agenda for a strategy session, all of that [00:12:45]: lives inside of the Here and Now, and we would love to have you join [00:12:48]: us. Until next time, thank you for being [00:12:52]: here. Thank you for being in business. Cheers to season [00:12:56]: six, and cheers to feeling good. [00:13:02]: Thanks for listening to Retail for the Rest of Us. Find additional [00:13:05]: information and resources related to this episode in the show notes or on our [00:13:09]: website, feelgoodretail.com. This show was lovingly produced and [00:13:13]: edited by Softer Sounds, a feminist podcast studio. If you [00:13:17]: enjoyed this episode, please take a minute to text it to your business bestie, [00:13:20]: share it on social media, and leave us a reading or review. It really [00:13:24]: helps the show grow organically, and we love making new friends. Thank [00:13:28]: you for being here. Thank you for being in business, and cheers to feeling [00:13:31]: good.
